Setting Up My New AP1100 Mount

August 10, 2014  •  Leave a Comment

I am finally getting around to setting up my new AP1100 mount, after it sitting in boxes in the garage for several weeks while I was tied up with other projects. The AP1100 is bigger and beefier than my existing AP900, has several new features such as thru-the-mount cabling, and I purchased it with the RA and Dec encoders. My AP900 will become my portable travel mount, for use at my remote cabin.

The AP1100 has a built in pier adapter with azimuth adjuster, so installing it on my Le Seuer Pier was simple - sit the RA section on the pier and tighten a few bolts. Because my pier is already well aligned to North, and I'm using the same bolt pattern, Polar Aligning the new mount should be simple.

Note the beginnings of the thru-the-mount cabling. This will be a great advantage, with no risk of cable snags.

The final cabling - note the dual control panels at the base of the mount. One is that standard AP CP3 control panel, while the other is for the encoders.

Here's the final setup, just waiting for Polar Alignment. Note the supervisor, Campbell the astronomy dog.
